Great American Main Street Winner 2026
Main Street America announced today that Downtown Wytheville, Inc. in Wytheville, Virginia, has received the prestigious Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA), recognizing excellence in preservation-based commercial district revitalization. The 2026 honors were presented at the opening plenary of the Main Street Now Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Selected by a national jury of leaders in economic development and historic preservation, Downtown Wytheville, Inc. is recognized for leading one of the nation’s most dramatic downtown turnarounds, reducing vacancy rates from 42 percent in 2014 to just 4 percent today through strategic preservation, stacked small wins, and deep community trust-building.
“Downtown Wytheville exemplifies the power of the Main Street Approach to rebuild not only buildings, but civic belief,” said Erin Barnes, President and CEO of Main Street America. “Through grassroots leadership, inclusive engagement, and a preservation-first strategy, Wytheville transformed a largely empty downtown into a thriving district where residents see themselves reflected in the future.”
Historic preservation has anchored the district’s resurgence. The adaptive reuse of long-neglected buildings has brought new life to downtown, including the restoration of the Millwald Theatre as a regional arts venue, the revitalization of the Bolling Wilson Hotel, the adaptive reuse of warehouse space into a vibrant indoor-outdoor Farmers Market, and the recruitment of destination businesses such as Moon Dog Brick Oven and 7 Dogs Brewpub and seven sisters brewery.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Downtown Wytheville, Inc. emerged as a trusted community development leader, administering over $1 million in rent and mortgage relief funds countywide and launching a “Not Back to Normal – Forward to Better” grant campaign to help local businesses adapt and thrive. The organization’s efforts were recognized nationally, including coverage by the Brookings Institution and selection for a rural small business pilot initiative.

What is GAMSA & Main Street America?
The Great American Main Street Award program recognizes communities exemplifying the use of the Main Street Approach to revitalize commercial districts. Winners are selected from a nationwide pool of applicants by a jury of Main Street professionals and leaders in the fields of community economic development and historic preservation. Since the award’s inception in 1995, only 115 Main Street programs have been honored as GAMSA communities

Why is this significant?
Since 1995, only 115 of over 2000 Main Street programs have been acknowledged as GAMSA-winning communities.
This has been a hard-won, community-driven effort requiring vision, thousands of volunteer hours from community members, and millions of dollars from public-private investment in creating a strong community we can all be proud to call home.
2026 is Downtown Wytheville’s 12th anniversary (having officially been designated a Main Street America/Virginia Main Street accredited organization in 2014).

Since 2014, we’ve seen a dramatic transformation of downtown with previously abandoned buildings gaining new life, many new transformative businesses, a revitalization of public amenities for Wytheville residents and tourists, a new social scene, and a renewal of community pride.
We achieved this as a community through the hard work of countless individuals, and GAMSA recognizes all this hard work and introduces a new Wytheville to the rest of America.
